About

  • Approach

My default state is wonder and curiosity. Much of my work is anchored by Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) and supported by Interpersonal Neurobiology(IPNB). I draw from Attachment theory, Narrative approaches, and hold a solid Social Justice orientation in my work. I believe we heal through relationship and connection. My approach to counseling, clinical supervision, group work, and training is very much a collaborative process that supports people to engage more deeply with their lives and relationships. Power imbalances and systems of oppression are central to all of my therapeutic understandings and interventions. I have a particular humility when doing this work with folks. I tend to pay close attention to trust building in the first several sessions. I am unapologetically transparent in my approach. I can be pretty direct sometimes. I don't pretend to know you better than you know yourself. I strive to be relational and purposeful when sharing about what I'm observing and experiencing in our sessions.

  • Hi there!

My name is Kirk and I am a commitment to curiosity, shared wisdom, and inspiration. At Rootstock Counseling I share strategies and experiences that support relational and collective growth. I have been in the social worky and counseling field for 15+ years. In my experiences, it has become clear that mental & emotional healing happens best in connection with others. Solidarity is power. On my own journey to make sense of these unprecedented times, it has become essential to challenge the sociopolitical forces of disconnection that impact our existence and quality of life. Sharing strategies to live more sustainably and meaningfully with each other is imperative for our emotional and relational health, as well, for the health of the planet.

  • Training

My graduate training is in Community Counseling. I studied at Lewis & Clark’s Graduate Program. During my time there, I completed the Ecopsychology certificate program, which focuses on studying the emotional bond between humans and the Earth. Shortly after graduating with my Masters degree, I trained with Dr. Bréne Brown and her senior staff. I started running shame resilience groups as a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator in 2014. The last several years I engaged in experiential trainings which has resulted in certification as a Group Psychotherapist. I am regularly engaged in continuing education, supervision, and consultation. I’m currently training to be a FLOW Facilitator through the Good Grief Network and I am very much looking forward to being able to offer groups through their 10 Step model.
